Concerning comments made by Mr David Bowie regarding the desirability of verbalising about musical experience.
"Writing about music is like dancing about architecture"
Everybodys heard that comment at some point. Like its creator, it seems to have been around for decades. Its eminently quotable, and its popularity has arisen because it surely captures some deep truth about music.
But the OOO would like to make these two important points:
1.
Dancing is an ever-changing, free-flowing form of bodily architecture.
and:
2.
To use the phrase "dancing about architecture" makes sense, even though we are "dancing about architecture" (ie using symbols to refer to the outside world) when we use that phrase.
(bonus 3rd point - point 2 makes sense too)
How does the outside world become mental content?
What is mental picturing?
